Surfing

One of the best and most consistent surfing venues Britain. The Western Isles are ideally located, with only 3000 miles of ocean to the west, plenty of time for the rollers to gain momentum. Driven by the gulf stream and the track of most Atlantic depressions, the Western Isles are a wind and surf paradise. When we say surfing paradise, we dont just mean the weather, with clear blue water and largely deserted beaches with some of the best scenery in the world, the surfing or spectating is a pleasure all year round.

Surfing lessons and tuition are available locally. There is also plenty of local information available from this seafaring island, advice on weather, tides and equipment.

Surfing in the western Isles is the wilderness experience you have to do.

Ideally situated in the centre of Stornoway, the County Hotel is an ideal base for this and other similar activities. You can enjoy comfortable accommodation, close to amenities and information. Our dining is flexible, giving you an option of menus every day. For first time visitors we can help with local information to help you and make your stay as memorable as possible, so you become one of our many regular visitors to the hotel.

Sailing

Clear waters and steady breezes are part of everyday life in the Western Isles. In other words a sailing dream. There are secluded bays, magnificent sea-cliffs, stunning scenery and quiet stretches of water for you to explore.

There is an annual "Sail Hebrides" Festival, in July that gives experienced and novice sailors to enjoy some of the beauty waters around the islands. Included are regattas, training lessons and experience opportunities for all ages and abilities.

Sailing in and around the Western Isles is an experience to remember.

Climbing

The Western Isles boasts some of the best climbing in Scotland. Largely undiscovered by less experienced climbers, this is often the destination for more seasoned climbers. They offer um-crowded and adventurous climbing on sea-cliff or mountain crags. Isolated and remote, giving you a chance to conquer nature in its rawest form.

Cliffs

The geography, weather and remote locations make the Western Isles a challenging climbing destination. Not for the faint-hearted.

There are guides and tutuion available, enquire before you set out.

Walking

Walking in the Outer Hebrides is as varied and different as the islands themselves. You can enjoy a quiet walk on the beach, explore the machair of the west-side and North Lewis. These machairs are some of the best opportunities in Europe to spot migrating birds. You can move on to the rugged mountains of Harris for some serious hill-walking or scrambling, or take a windswept stroll along sea cliffs boasting fresh Atlantic air.
In fact, the Western Isles is one of natures best kept secrets for walking, providing a variety of terrain and scenes to suit everyone.
